This time, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time in Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong, and the plot is faithful to the comic book plot well. It also brings back the fan-favorite character, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Then there’s the hilarious wacky humor that is exclusive to director Taika Waititi. Yet, Love and Thunder, although a strong standalone film, doesn’t quite match the previous Thor instalment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his individual films either failed to hit the mark entirely or hit the target. While the origins story, Thor (2011) was good enough to get the ball rolling, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was the most awful entry. But, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 is sure to be among everyone’s top five MCU films. Expectations were high ahead of the release due to the returning of the Hemsworth/Taika Warwick collaboration.
Gorr (Bale), a god who wants to exterminate all gods, attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who is now Mighty Thor. This film is simple and easy to understand, which is a departure from Marvel’s previous movies. The acting is very positive. Hemsworth performs well as the character who is experiencing having a midlife crisis. However, Bale and Portman are the most notable. The opening credit sequence the potential of what Bale can accomplish. Gorr could well have been the next Thanos for an MCU that is in desperate need of good supervillains and Bale gives a bit of eeriness to the character, however, there’s nothing a lot more.
On the other the other hand, Portman, who makes her reentry to the Marvel world after missing the previous two Thor films, is the cancer-afflicted ex-girlfriend chosen by Mjolnir. Marvel seems to be eager to hand over the mantles Hawkeye and Hulk to female characters. I expected that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the representation checklist. The film tells a heartwarming story about the astrophysicist, who is able to display her biceps on more occasions than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing too, through all the cameos featured in the film. In addition to the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team We also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Additionally, we see Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play, respectively. Waititi is now Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his favourite genre. It’s amusing to see an image of a couple of noisy goats , as well as Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie takes on the role of Old Spice’s ambassador.
There’s also the running gag of Thor looking for his Mjolnir and being afraid by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are hilarious, however they are at the expense of deep emotion. They also expose the weak plot. Thor: Love and Thunder examines all kinds of love, from father-daughter bonds to intricate romances between distant lovers… There’s a parallel between Gorr losing his respect for Rapu and Thor becoming disillusioned of Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). These are just a few of the ideas yet…
As always, there are plenty of easter eggs and even callbacks to films such as Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. We are shown a picture of the dead god, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We see Hemsworth sporting the original Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognise. When Thor wears his armor during the fight with Zeus Then we witness a tattoo saying “RIP Loki’ with the helmet of the trickster inscribed on the back of our space Viking. The wicked Necrosword is revealed and it’s fascinating to see how many weapons are shown that can control people, given the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own thoughts.
We have seen this with the ten rings in Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade in the post-credits scene in Eternals. The sentence “Gods don’t empower you however they will make use of to use you” from Marvel’s newest show, Moonknight, feels very real. There’s also a little bit about Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in the war and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
The first part of the movie reminds us of the vivid colors we loved in Ragnarok However, the majority of the second half is set in a dark realm where everything is predominantly black and white. However, it is important to note that the action scenes shot in monochrome are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth will continue to keep playing Thor Hemsworth will continue to play Thor, which is an enormous relief for MCU fans who’ve seen the first Avengers die or hang their heads.
